Fly bites on neck not going?
Wheatear has about 10 hard lumps on his neck - I assumed they were horsefly bites when they were really bad a month ago but they're not getting any
smaller. Most have a small scab but they don't seem to be bothering him much. Is there anything I can do about them? I tried to take a photo but the
only thing in focus was my thumb!

Are they under the mane? Might be a kind of prickly heat / sweat rash if they are.

I'm not sure Claire. My experience of a bad 's fly bite was one on Nell thigh that swelled to the size of a golf ball. She had been sold at that
point but not vetted so out of abundant caution I'd phoned the vet who put her on anti biotics. The bite went down in a week. When she was vetted the
vet who did the vetting said that the lump looked like it had been there a long time judging from the colour of the skin...fortunately Sue who bought
her had examined her very closely and knew she did not have a lump there before. I mention this only because I think Nell had sensitive skin . ..maybe
Wheatear is the same?

Have you put any cream on at all? Sometimes i find lumps like that and a friend of mine did too, but once we cleaned them up and put cream on it was
more matted coat that created the 'lump effect'from a bite that both mares had. I like Sudocrem, wound cream or aloe vera depending on location/mood
i am in after my 'diagnosis' of what is best!!!

This seems to be a particularly bad year for fly bites, Cara never had anything like this last year, but is nobbly and scabby all over. Yes I use
hyperican calendula cream or aloe vera, if one might not work the other hopefully will.

Howard is also covered in bites high up on his face and behind his ear. He has about 20 and they have been there a couple of weeks at least. They
are healing but when the sacb drops off he has a bald patch so you can imagine what a pretty picture he is at the mo what with his mane problem.
I use sudocreme and put loads of fly repellant in his forelock to keep the flies off. I agree it is a very bad year for flies.

Zeph's ok but our big Ted is covered in small lumps, some with a little scab on - mostly around middle, not so much on neck or quarters. I was
wondering if he actually has had an allergic reaction - having said that, he's not too bothered about it. He does suffer badly with fly bites every
year, but this is definitely the worst year.
